PP decides on main candidates - but still seeks possible mayors in Jávea and Alfaz

The PP party in Valencia has decided on the majority of its candidates for the May 22 municipal elections, but is still without leaders in several towns with large expat communities.

The regional body has authority to appoint candidates in all towns with more than 20,000 registered residents.

However, it has been unable to appoint firm candidates in Alfaz del Pi and Jávea who would lead renewed lists in both towns.

Surveys say the party could obtain good results in both areas, but in recent elections the lack of a strong candidate has not turned surveys into results.

Internal disputes in Benidorm, San Juan and Calpe have been pushed aside by the regional PP board which has appointed candidates in each town.

Valencia has decided to appoint Manuel Pérez Fenoll as candidate for Benidorm, despite a bid by his party rival Gema Amor to lead the lists.

Sr Pérez Fenoll was mayor until 2009 when he was ousted from office because of the defection of PP councillor José Bañuls - who joined the socialist opposition that went on to take over the mayor's office with Agustín Navarro.
