14 Abril 2011 Brussels petitions committee hears Almería woes Costa Almería News | Noticia Members of the Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN) protest group travelled to Brussels this week to speak out against urban planning abuse in Spain. The AUAN’s president, Maura Hillen, was invited to speak before the EU Petitions Committee in Brussels after submitting a complaint. Mrs Hillen said she put forward the case of “innocent homeowners” who had bought properties in Spain “in good faith” and were now facing economic ruin through the loss of their homes without hope of compensation or were forced to live without access to basic infrastructure such as electricity and water. Mrs Hillen said: “These abuses contravene the EU Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, and these laws must be respected and complied with by Spain.”
