22 Junio 2011 In an effort to find solutions to the problems affecting the hundreds of thousands of expats who have fallen foul of foreign planning in the EU, vice president of the European Parliament, Diana Wallis MEP, hosted a seminar. The Telegraph | Noticia Entitled "European Property Rights and Wrongs; the role of the EU in protecting the right to property", the seminar included a talk from a citizens' pressure group formed following issues with regional Spanish governments; a discussion on human rights legislation as a means of defence; and an update on a pilot project that may eventually solve the problems associated with cross-border property purchasing. Speaking after the event, which was held at the European Parliament in Brussels, Diana Wallis MEP (Liberal Democrats, UK), said: "Property laws across the EU are very different and complex and fall mainly outside EU competencies. However, we must urgently arrive at a system that will guarantee legal certainty to people buying land abroad. "In practice, this means we must ensure that there is full access to information on the state of a property, the conditions attached to it and any other legal obligations or obstacles. This must go hand in hand with a transparent administration of the property deal and a quick and clear judicial process in case something goes wrong. "The seminar has shown clearly that the EU has a role to play in helping to facilitate property deals across borders and at the very least provide a framework of legal certainty."
