The public works ministry is studying a proposal to declare an amnesty on hundreds of thousands of illegal homes throughout Spain.

The aim of the ministry is to stop demolitions that have already been ordered by the courts if the properties are occupied by someone of good standing.

To that end the ministry has sent a a draught copy of a change to current urban development legislation to regional governments and town halls for their comments and suggestions.

The exact number of illegal properties in Spain is impossible to calculate but for those people in places such as Catral and Llíber this news may provide them with some hope that central government is preparing to take positive action.
